Kraken has switched on bitcoin and ether options for eligible clients across the European Economic Area. The contracts trade on Kraken Pro, beside spot and futures trading, from one account. The exchange announced the launch on October 26, per its blog. Contracts track bitcoin-dollar and ether-dollar pairs, settle in dollars, and trade through private quotes.

The timing puts a regulated options venue in front of European traders while bitcoin trades near $80,000.

The contracts are European-style and cash-settled. No bitcoin or ether changes hands at expiry. Premium, profit and loss, and settlement all come out in dollars. Four expiry rungs are on offer: a week, a month, a quarter and half a year out. Trading runs on a request-for-quote basis. A client builds a trade of up to five legs, collects time-limited quotes, accepts one. Acceptance is binding. Margining follows the futures pattern. The premium does not leave the account in full at the open. Profit and loss move the collateral balance directly. Portfolio margin comes switched on, so offsetting positions cut the collateral a trade needs. Over 30 currencies and assets qualify as collateral. Clients must complete a questionnaire before options unlock.

Two regulated entities sit behind the single interface. Payward Europe Solutions Limited, an Ireland-based firm, holds custody as MiCA custodian. The options come from the group's Cypriot investment firm, PEDSL-CY. CySEC regulates that firm under licence 342/17. Kraken acquired that firm, formerly I.F. Greenfields Wealth, in 2025 for its MiFID permissions, per Finance Magnates. One account and collateral pool covers spot, futures and options — no new wallet needed.

The European launch follows the options rollout outside Europe in July. EEA access was flagged at the time for later in 2026. Finance Magnates reported that later stages may add a public order book and further underlyings. Kraken has given no timetable for either step.

Why it matters

Regulated European derivatives access is the real story here, not the instrument itself. Options let a trader hedge a bitcoin holding without selling it. They also price a view on volatility and time rather than direction alone. A straddle, for example, can pay off on a large move either way. A bought put caps the loss at the premium paid. That toolkit arrives on a MiFID-licensed venue. It lands days after Kraken's parent Payward won in-principle approval for a Kazakhstan licence, another regulated-market step. The risk side is just as concrete. Kraken warns that a sold option's losses can run well past the margin posted. A distressed portfolio faces a sealed-offer auction instead of order-book liquidation.

What to watch

  • Whether Kraken adds a public order book and more underlyings, and on what timetable.
  • How the options book behaves through the Federal Reserve's decision week, with bitcoin near $80,133 in MarketRadar's snapshot.
  • Whether rival venues answer with their own regulated European options offers before year-end.
  • How large the eligible client pool proves once the questionnaire gate and country availability are applied.

Key points

  • Eligible EEA clients can use bitcoin and ether options via Kraken Pro from their existing derivatives account.
  • Contracts are European-style and cash-settled in dollars, with week, month, quarter and half-year expiries.
  • Request-for-quote trading, up to five legs; accepted quotes bind.
  • Portfolio margin comes switched on, and 30+ currencies can serve as collateral.
  • Custody sits with Payward Europe Solutions Limited under MiCA; instruments come from PEDSL-CY under CySEC licence 342/17.
  • Options launched outside Europe in July; EEA access was scheduled to follow later in 2026.

MarketRadar take

This is a structure story, not a price call. A regulated, dollar-settled options venue inside the EEA gives European traders a hedging tool previously sourced offshore or through less transparent routes. The shared-collateral design lowers the friction of using it. The flow data over the next few sessions matters more than the launch headline. With bitcoin at $80,133 and ether at $2,325 in our snapshot, the near-term read stays neutral for prices. The venue widens the toolkit. It does not by itself move the underlying.
