Profit / Loss Calculator

What this tool does

The Profit / Loss Calculator projects what a trade will make or lose given an entry price, an exit price, and a position size. It works for both long positions (profit when price rises) and short positions (profit when price falls), and converts the result into your account currency. Some versions also subtract the spread or commission so the figure is closer to reality.

Traders use it in two ways: before entering, to check whether a planned take-profit is actually worth the risk; and after closing, to review what a trade really earned once costs are included. Seeing the numbers in advance removes a lot of wishful thinking — a "200 pip winner" sounds great until you discover it was only worth $40 on your position size.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether the trade is long (buy) or short (sell).
  2. Enter your entry price and your planned exit price (or take-profit level).
  3. Enter the position size in lots or units.
  4. Add the spread or commission if you want a net figure.
  5. Read the projected profit or loss in your account currency.
  6. Compare it with your planned risk to check the reward-to-risk ratio makes sense to you.

Frequently asked questions

Does it include swap or overnight fees?

The basic calculation covers price movement only. Swap charges apply when positions are held overnight and vary by broker and pair, so add them separately if you hold trades for days.

Why is my actual profit different from the estimate?

Slippage (your fill price differing from your order price), spread widening during news, and commissions can all shift the final number. Treat the calculator as an estimate, not a guarantee.

What is a good reward-to-risk ratio?

Many traders look for at least 1.5:1 or 2:1 — risking $100 to potentially make $150–$200. The "right" ratio depends on your strategy's win rate; a low win-rate strategy needs a higher ratio to stay profitable.
