Rank coins by market value and Bitcoin sits alone, more than five times Ethereum's size. Rank them by what changed hands in the last day and the order flips: a dollar stablecoin traded almost twice Bitcoin's volume, and two dollar stablecoins together handled $53.45 billion, about 60% of the $88.97 billion turned over by the five names below. It was a Federal Reserve decision day.
Methodology note: this ranking uses 24-hour trading volume only, from CoinGecko data read at 12:43 UTC on October 28, 2026. Every coin also needed a verifiable October 2026 catalyst, and prices below come from that snapshot, not a live ticker.
The top 5, side by side
| Rank | Coin | Price | Market cap | 24h volume | 24h | 7d |

| 2 | Bitcoin (BTC) | $80,663 | $1.62T | $23.87B | +0.54% | -2.49% |
| 3 | USD Coin (USDC) | $0.9993 | $71.10B | $11.01B | 0.00% | -0.01% |
| 4 | Ethereum (ETH) | $2,337.45 | $285.57B | $9.57B | +0.32% | -3.90% |
| 5 | Solana (SOL) | $101.46 | $59.86B | $2.08B | +0.77% | -3.66% |
1. Tether (USDT) — $42.44 billion, the market's dollar rail
Tether is a dollar-pegged token from Tether Limited, based in El Salvador, and it works as crypto's default settlement currency: traders park sale proceeds in it, post it as collateral, and route trades through it instead of converting to bank dollars each time. Its $42.44 billion of daily turnover was 47.7% of the top five's combined volume, while the token stayed within a fraction of a cent of $1.00.
Regulation, not price, drives the October story here. CryptoNews reported that the US Treasury's proposed GENIUS Act rulebook closed its comment window on October 19, 2026. The Comptroller had said in August that a final OCC rule was expected by November 2026. January 18, 2027 stands as the statutory backstop date, with July 18, 2028 as the later date for full compliance by foreign issuers, and as of October 19 Treasury had granted no comparability determination to any foreign jurisdiction, El Salvador included. Tether's US-side answer is a separate token, USAT, launched January 27, 2026 through Anchorage Digital Bank, with Cantor Fitzgerald holding the reserves.
Traders use it to move dollar value between exchanges, trades and DeFi positions without a bank wire, as a parking spot and settlement tool rather than an asset expected to gain against the dollar.
2. Bitcoin (BTC) — $23.87 billion, volume into the Fed decision
Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency, capped at 21 million coins, and at $1.62 trillion it remains by far the largest crypto asset even though it ranks second here by turnover. Its $23.87 billion of 24-hour volume arrived as the Federal Reserve prepared to announce its interest-rate decision at 18:00 UTC, after a week inside a tight $79,000 to $81,000 band that included a dip below $80,000 on Tuesday.
Flow data explains part of the churn. Farside Investors data cited by CoinDesk showed $176 million of net subscriptions to US spot Bitcoin funds on Tuesday. It was the second session in a row where buying beat redemptions, after $635.6 million of net redemptions on October 22 and $137.9 million more on October 23. A separate on-chain reading from Santiment, reported by crypto.news, counted 14,942 BTC moving off exchanges in a single day, the biggest one-day withdrawal in five weeks, just before the Fed announcement.
Bitcoin is a capped-supply asset and the market's risk gauge, so altcoin volume usually follows when its volume spikes on a macro day.
3. USD Coin (USDC) — $11.01 billion, regulation on two continents
USD Coin is Circle's dollar-pegged token, redeemable one-to-one for US dollars and backed by cash and cash-equivalent assets, per Circle's own project information cited in October reporting. Its $11.01 billion of daily volume puts it third, ahead of every volatile coin on this list, at $0.9993 in the snapshot.
October gave USDC two regulatory milestones. Cointelegraph reported that the European Banking Authority placed USDC on October 14, 2026 in the EU's top supervisory tier under MiCA, the first token to receive that placement. Direct EBA oversight of reserves, liquidity, own funds and recovery plans starts November 12, 2026, while France's ACPR keeps governance and outsourcing. Then, on October 27, ACI Worldwide and Circle announced a Colombian pilot testing USDC settlement inside existing payment operations, using ACI Connetic alongside Bre-B, Colombia's interoperable instant-payment system.
Payments teams use it where a regulated US issuer matters, as a second dollar rail and as the on-ramp between bank dollars and crypto markets.
4. Ethereum (ETH) — $9.57 billion, heavy trading through a weak October
Ethereum is the largest smart-contract network, the base layer where most tokens, stablecoins and DeFi applications run, and its $285.57 billion market value is second only to Bitcoin. Trading stayed heavy at $9.57 billion in 24 hours even as the price fell 3.90% over seven days to $2,337.45.
Two October facts frame that activity. Crypto Daily reported roughly $1.13 billion of net redemptions from US spot Ethereum funds across the 21 trading days to October 26, set against one $4.3 million net subscription day on October 23, with total assets across those funds near $14.6 billion. Developers also pushed back the Glamsterdam testnet activation on Hoodi, due October 26, while they examined how EIP-8037 interacts with contracts already deployed; no replacement date had been given, though the delay does not touch mainnet directly.
Developers build lending, trading and token projects on it, and users pay gas in ETH to run them.
5. Solana (SOL) — $2.08 billion, a faster network meets ETF outflows
Solana is a high-throughput smart-contract network built for fast, low-cost transfers and trading, and its $2.08 billion of daily volume is the smallest on this list yet still larger than every coin outside the top five except XRP. At $101.46 it held above $100 in the snapshot.
The network itself changed on October 21, 2026, when Alpenglow went live on mainnet-beta. PR Newswire reporting put the activation block at 459,653,000 and described a new consensus system replacing TowerBFT, with a design goal of about 150 milliseconds to finality, down from roughly 12.8 seconds. Galaxy reported a flat charge of 0.8 SOL per epoch for validators replacing per-vote costs. Treasury demand added a second thread: GlobeNewswire reporting said DeFi Development Corp. lifted its holdings by 5,346 SOL on October 26 to 2,595,612 SOL and SOL equivalents. Fund flows ran the other way, with EconoTimes reporting $6.7 million of net redemptions from US spot Solana funds on October 19, an 11-session streak, against $1.542 billion of cumulative subscriptions since launch.
Speed is the pitch: traders pick Solana when settlement time and fees matter more than Ethereum's larger application base.
Why it matters
Volume shows where money is actually moving, and on October 28 it was moving into dollars in measured amounts. Stablecoins took 60% of the top five's turnover, Bitcoin took another 27%, and the two smart-contract networks shared the rest, which matches a market waiting on a central-bank decision rather than chasing a new theme. The top two names alone handled $66.31 billion, nearly three-quarters of the five-coin total.

MarketRadar take
This list reads as a defensive market, not a euphoric one: dollars did the heavy lifting, Bitcoin volume clustered around a known macro event, and the two application networks traded hard while their fund flows stayed negative. That mix can change fast after the Fed decision. Treat every figure here as a dated snapshot from October 28, 2026. This article is educational only, not financial advice, and crypto prices can move sharply in either direction within hours.
