Bitcoin spent Monday holding above $82,000. It was the coin's strongest position in weeks. The move followed President Donald Trump's declaration that the war with Iran was finished — and his order to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. CoinGecko data put BTC at $82,025 in the Monday evening session, up 1.3% on the day, with Finnhub's feed showing an intraday peak of $83,158. The coin now sits roughly 12% above the $73,000 ceiling of that band. It had been pinned inside the tight $65,000-$73,000 range for weeks while the Hormuz standoff dragged on.

The spark came late Sunday on Truth Social. Trump announced the arrangement was finished, saying he would open the strait to shipping without tolls and lift the American naval blockade at the same time. His closing line urged the "Ships of the World" to start their engines — vintage Trump showmanship. A day earlier he had described the agreement as largely settled. That followed conversations with Pakistan's mediator, Gulf partners and Israel. The remaining points of an MoU were still being worked out.

Tehran's response gave traders both confirmation and reason to stay cautious. President Masoud Pezeshkian posted "Agreement reached" on X. The Friday signing in Geneva was confirmed by Kazem Gharibabadi, who holds the deputy foreign minister portfolio. But the Fars news agency pushed back. The outlet, which sits close to the Revolutionary Guard, insisted the strait would stay under Iranian control. It called Trump's version of events "inconsistent with reality." Axios, citing a US official, reported the draft terms: the strait reopens without tolls for a two-month truce, Iran resumes selling oil freely, nuclear talks follow, and Washington ends its blockade of Iranian ports. Speaking to the New York Times, three senior Iranian officials said the package could release $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets.

Why it matters

Crypto has traded like a geopolitical instrument all year, and the weekend was a textbook case. When the war premium came out of oil, risk appetite flowed back into everything else. Sunday evening's cross-asset snapshot told the story in one sweep:

AssetMoveLevel
Bitcoin+1.3% (24h)~$82,025
Ethereum+1.2% (24h)~$2,399
Brent crude-3.9%~$84
WTI crude-4.8%~$81
Dow futures+0.52%+267 pts

The breakout math is what makes this more than a headline bounce. Bitcoin is now about 26% above the $65,000 floor of its war range. It is 28% above the February low near $64,000. Yet it still sits roughly 34% below the October 2025 peak around $125,000. The geopolitical discount is unwinding, but the old high-water mark is a long way off. Strategy's Michael Saylor told interviewers he expects bitcoin to recover above $100,000 on institutional adoption. That view now has one less headwind attached — if the strait actually reopens.

What to watch

  • Friday's signing in Geneva. Tehran named the Swiss city as the venue. If the ceremony slips, the risk premium snaps back fast. Fars has already given Iran a rhetorical exit ramp.
  • Whether oil keeps falling. Brent near $84 sits roughly 18% below its $102 close on October 2. Sustained declines would ease the energy-driven slice of US inflation. That slice ran hot at 3.7% in September.
  • The $83,158 intraday peak. Bitcoin tagged it Monday per Finnhub's feed. A daily close above it would confirm the range breakout — not just a weekend gap.
  • November 3 US midterms. The calendar is now part of the trade. Both sides want the optics of a finished deal before voters go to the polls.

MarketRadar take

This is a de-escalation bid, and crypto is treating it as one. Bitcoin's jump out of the $65K-$73K corridor is the market repricing a risk that had been the single biggest weight on sentiment since February. The skepticism is warranted. The region has produced several "deal" headlines that later unraveled. But the structure looks different this time: a named signing date, Pakistan's prime minister publicly committed to hosting more talks, and confirmation language from both capitals instead of one. As long as Friday's ceremony holds, the path of least resistance for BTC is higher; if it doesn't, the war range is waiting right below.
